Victoria Atkins MP has welcomed plans to provide faster broadband speeds across the country.
The Prime Minister has outlined plans to make sure that everyone will have access to fast, affordable broadband by the end of this Parliament. This commitment is expected to include the introduction of a Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, putting it on a similar footing as other essential services like water and electricity.
This weekend, the Prime Minister said, “Access to the internet shouldn’t be a luxury; it should be a right – absolutely fundamental to life in 21st century Britain. That is why I’m announcing a giant leap in my digital mission for Britain. Just as our forebears effectively brought gas, electricity and water to all, we’re going to bring fast broadband to every home and business that wants it. That’s right: we’re getting Britain – all of Britain – online, and on the way to becoming the most prosperous economy in the whole of Europe.”
Victoria said, “I am delighted that the Prime Minister has announced this leap in his digital mission for Britain.
Securing access to better broadband was the first campaign I launched as a candidate, acting on the concerns voiced by constituents. Since the election, I have made the case to Ministers and BT itself that the provision of superfast broadband in Louth & Horncastle must be a priority.
Fast broadband connectivity is a key service, essential not only for our home lives but also for businesses and entrepreneurs all over the constituency.
The Prime Minister’s commitment to this important goal is welcome news for our area and shows that our local campaign is being heard at the very highest level.
I will continue to work with those in Government and beyond to secure this provision for all my constituents.”
