In the first Prime Minister’s Questions featuring the new Prime Minister, Louth & Horncastle’s Member of Parliament, Victoria Atkins, called for action to help local people who rely on heating oil and have faced steep price rises in recent months.
After welcoming Liz Truss to her new role, Ms Atkins described how 1.5 million households across the country have faced prices of around 130% and are not included in the energy price cap. She asked for confirmation that they would be included in the package of support which is to be announced on Thursday 8th September.
Ms Truss confirmed that the Government would make sure they are looking after everybody in this very difficult winter.
Commenting after Prime Minister’s Questions, Victoria Atkins MP said:
“In rural areas such as ours, many people have no choice but to use domestic heating oil in their homes. I have been very concerned about the impact of the recent price rises on my constituents and have already written to Treasury Ministers to ask for solutions.
I will examine the Government’s package of support when it is announced to ensure that it includes support for my constituents and businesses whether they are on or off the grid.
We have some difficult months ahead of us as a country with the pressures of inflation, energy availability and rising food prices bearing down on us. I will be working hard with local councils, businesses, schools and charities to help constituents with national and local support.”
