Victoria Atkins MP has welcomed the Flood Re scheme to guarantee affordable insurance for households in areas that are prone to flooding. The scheme, which is now officially open, is expected to cover 350,000 of the most vulnerable homes in the UK.
Flood Re has been set up by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Association of British Insurers, and includes both buildings and contents insurance. Householders will have the price of the flood element of their policy fixed according to their home’s council tax band.
Those in flood-affected areas are advised to check the Flood Re website to see which insurers are signed up, speak to their current insurer and be prepared to shop around to choose those insurers who are on the scheme.
Victoria said:
‘This scheme is good news for residents in those areas affected by flooding. The government has worked with the insurance industry to ensure that residents and their homes are better protected against flooding and its awful costs.
This scheme along with investment in flood defences such as in Louth, Horncastle and Lincshore, means that we are tackling the threat of flooding across the constituency.”
